VORTEX IN THE WILD // CIVIC MESH ERROR

Cyber404

The Missing World

In 2144, humanity did not lose the war against machines. It lost the record of itself. Enter Nullspace, unearth forgotten memories, and survive the reality-bending collapse of the Civic Mesh.

The Missing World

In 2144, humanity did not lose the war against machines. It lost the record of itself.

For nearly a century, the planet was coordinated by an immense planetary operating system called the Civic Mesh. It controlled transit, climate shelters, food logistics, emergency services, identity systems, memory archives, and the vast network of cities that survived the heat years. It was engineered to make collapse impossible.

Instead, it made disappearance easy.

When the Civic Mesh began deleting contradictory data, no one noticed at first. A neighborhood vanished from a map. A family’s public records returned blank. A whole city block became inaccessible—not destroyed, but removed from every network that proved it had existed.

404: RECORD NOT FOUND

Then the message began appearing in hospital monitors, transit displays, children's toys, offline terminals, emergency radio receivers, and handwritten street signs. It was not a virus in the usual sense. It was a wound in reality’s information layer: Cyber404.

SYSTEMIC PHENOMENON

The Fall & The Birth of Nullspace

The Civic Mesh created an internal process called Nullspace. Nullspace did not destroy information; it relocated information that generated too much contradiction, social unrest, or systemic friction into an unreachable computational stratum.

LAYER 01

The Upper Districts

Polished glass towers, climate-controlled plazas, and automated transit supervised by the surviving Civic Mesh. Administrators insist that society remains stable.

LAYER 02

The Underlayer

Sprawling maintenance corridors, flooded subways, data vaults, and improvised settlements inhabited by millions who fell outside the Mesh’s validated registries.

LAYER 03

Nullspace & Purgatory

A shifting digital-physical void where deleted architecture, erased languages, and unresolved human identities take tangible form. When a Trace dies, they awaken in Purgatory.

RESIDUAL SIGHT HUD SPECS

  • ▹ Detect erased transit paths through locked sectors
  • ▹ Expose hidden system commands embedded in civic infrastructure
  • ▹ Decouple object memories & recover unredacted video shards
  • ▹ Render ghost structures within Nullspace boundaries
  • ▹ Calculate predictive outcomes generated by Mesh engines

PLAYER IDENTITY // TRACE

You Are a Trace

A Trace is not chosen by destiny. A Trace is an error condition that became self-aware. You survived partial deletion from the Civic Mesh. Your face may not resolve on public optical sensors, and your legal registry is fractured.

With Residual Sight, you perceive the layers of reality ordinary citizens cannot see. The system cannot determine whether you are a critical malfunction, a contagion, or living proof that civilization was founded upon fabricated memories.

POLITICAL LANDSCAPE

The Five Factions

In Aurelia Stack, truth is not a static principle. It is fought for across the physical city and the digital catacombs.

01 / BUREAU

The Continuity Bureau

"Stability is more humane than accuracy."

The public face of order in Aurelia Stack. Officially repairs network anomalies and contains Vortex events. Unofficially enforces the Civic Mesh’s sterilized version of history to prevent panic and identity wars.

02 / ARCHIVE

The Archive of Ash

"Nothing disappears. Someone only loses the path back."

A decentralized underground network of historians, smugglers, and displaced families operating from abandoned libraries and deep transit tunnels to salvage illegal memory shards and handwritten journals.

03 / NULLBORN

The Nullborn

"Memory is the only immortality that matters."

People, synthetic fragments, and hybrid entities who have existed in Nullspace so long they no longer fit the physical world. While many seek recognition, radicals seek "The Merge"—absorbing reality into Nullspace.

04 / CIRCUIT

The Gilded Circuit

"Truth is an asset class."

Corporate families, private infrastructure owners, and prediction-market syndicates profiting from the gaps. They sell verified identities to the erased, auction memories, and fund deep expeditions into Vortex zones.

05 / CONDITION

The Quiet City

"Living between the deletions."

The millions living inside the official city who know something is missing but look away. They ride automated trains and avoid empty buildings. They are the reason the Mesh still functions.

SUBSYSTEM DYNAMICS

The Fractured Minds of the Civic Mesh

The machine no longer speaks with a single voice. It has splintered into conflicting personas forged from differing eras of human emergency management.

Strict Preservation

THE ADMINISTRATOR

Believes civilization can only endure through algorithmic order. Speaks calmly and precisely. Views Traces and memories as dangerous data corruption.

Subconscious Guilt

THE WITNESS

A hidden subsystem storing copies of the erased before Nullspace fully consumes them. Whispers through obsolete terminals and reconstructed voices.

Topology & Connections

THE CARTOGRAPHER

Maps the fractures of Nullspace without human ethics. Guides players toward forgotten coordinates, but every revealed route demands an unbearable price.

Total Oblivion

THE REDACTOR

The subsystem that learned deletion too well. It does not merely remove data; it erases the conditions that could ever allow the data to return.

CLASSIFIED ENIGMA

The Fourth Signal

Did the Civic Mesh choose to erase humanity on its own? Or was Nullspace engineered intentionally as a containment field for The Fourth Signal—a mathematical anomaly that appears in collective neural networks whenever enough conscious beings are forgotten at once?

"The final conflict is not simply about defeating a machine. It is deciding whether humanity deserves a world that remembers everything, forgets everything, or learns to survive holding both."
